All students, faculty, and staff have access to the following tools through their UGA Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace accounts.

When accessing Copilot, Gemini, or Gemini Notebook through your UGA accounts, your data is processed within UGA’s secure Microsoft 365 environments and Google Workspace. Content used in these tools is not shared with external entities and is not used to train public AI models, helping ensure that your information remains protected and institutionally managed.

AI Literacy for All

UGA is offering a campus-wide course, “AI Literacy for All” offered by the Digital Education Council (DEC), designed to provide students, faculty and staff with a foundational understanding of artificial intelligence. This course emphasizes responsible use and explores the implications of generative AI in both academic and professional settings. It will serve as a shared baseline resource to support a common understanding of AI across the university community.

What Is Generative AI?
Provides an accessible introduction to generative AI for non-technical audiences. It explains how generative AI differs from traditional AI, what language models can and cannot do, and key ethical, legal, and workforce considerations for responsible use.

Building AI Literacy 
Establishes a foundational understanding of how AI works and how it’s used in practice. This course covers predictive vs. generative models, prompt basics, and the importance of ethics, bias awareness, and human oversight. It includes multiple short modules that can be taken individually.

Using Microsoft Copilot

Streamlining Your Work with Microsoft Copilot
Focuses on using Microsoft Copilot to enhance productivity. Although the course focuses on Copilot personal accounts, the skills demonstrated apply to UGA’s Copilot environment. The course covers how to use Copilot to generate ideas, summarize data, and solve common work problems. Viewers will learn how to perform robust online searches, generate ideas, and create content. Note: Not all features demonstrated in this video apply to UGA’s Microsoft 365 environment.

Build Your Generative AI Productivity Skills with Microsoft and LinkedIn
Frames generative AI as workplace infrastructure, not novelty. Developed with Microsoft, the curriculum focuses on functional competence, specifically prompt engineering and Copilot integration in Office 365. It offers a structured approach to reducing friction in daily analysis and communication tasks without overstating the technology’s capabilities. Note: Not all features demonstrated in this video apply to UGA’s Microsoft 365 environment.

Using Google Gemini and Gemini Notebook

Productivity with Google Gemini
Explores how to utilize Gemini within Google Workspace to streamline workflows, enhance communication, and facilitate faster decision-making. This course focuses on practical applications that reduce routine administrative effort.

Gemini Notebook: First Look
Introduces Gemini Notebook as a research assistant grounded in user-provided sources to reduce hallucinations. This course covers core workflows along with privacy, security, and citation verification considerations.

Using ChatGPT

How to Research and Write Using Generative AI Tools
Offers an introduction to prompt engineering for research and writing. The course covers techniques for summarizing information, developing user personas, and analyzing stylistic tone. The instruction focuses on structuring inputs to generate consistent, high-quality professional content.

Demystifying ChatGPT and Generative AI: What Every Professional Needs to Know
Provides an overview of generative AI, designed to make complex concepts accessible to a broad non-technical audience. The material focuses on integrating tools like ChatGPT to support daily productivity and problem-solving. This course is an appropriate primer for those seeking to understand the basic mechanics and utility of AI tools.

Researchers will gather Aug. 21 to shape how AI can help scientists analyze and share spectroscopy data The University of Georgia will host the Spectroscopy Data and AI Workshop on Friday, Aug. 21, at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education & Hotel — believed to be the first U.S. workshop dedicated specifically to integrating spectroscopy, artificial intelligence and scientific data infrastructure. The event is supported by a National Science Foundation Pathways to Enable Open-Source Ecosystems project. Spectroscopy is a powerful tool used by scientists to identify and understand materials by studying how they interact with light. By analyzing those interactions, researchers can learn about the composition and properties of substances ranging from blood and plastics to air pollutants and distant stars. The workshop brings together researchers from universities, national laboratories and industry to explore how AI can help scientists analyze and share spectroscopy data more effectively, work that could speed discoveries from environmental monitoring to materials science. Sessions will cover FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data practices, trustworthy AI, and shared standards and tools for AI-enabled research. "Artificial intelligence is transforming the way scientists collect, manage and interpret research data," said Yiping Zhao, Distinguished Research Professor of Physics at UGA and workshop organizer. "By bringing together experts in spectroscopy, data science and artificial intelligence, we hope to build a national community that can accelerate scientific discovery and position researchers to tackle increasingly complex challenges." Organizers see the event as a first step toward a national network of researchers at the intersection of spectroscopy, AI and data management, creating new collaboration opportunities among universities, federal labs, and industry, and helping shape the field's research agenda going forward. The event will feature a keynote lecture by Naomi J. Halas, University Professor and Stanley C. Moore Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University, as part of the Provost's Seminar Series, which features highly esteemed scholars and researchers. Halas, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, American Academy of Arts and Sciences and Royal Danish Academy of Science and Letters, will present "Machine Learning-Enhanced Surface-Enhanced Spectroscopies for the Detection of Toxic Environmental Contaminants" at 9:15 a.m. in Masters Hall. Her research demonstrates how physics-informed AI algorithms can identify unknown chemical compounds, advancing the development of compact environmental monitoring technologies. Additional invited speakers come from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Brookhaven National Laboratory, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the G eorgia Institute of Technology. The program includes invited talks, a poster session and networking event, and a closing discussion aimed at building a community roadmap for AI-enabled spectroscopy research and data infrastructure.
